Family lore has it that William was a leap year baby, being born on Saturday February 29th, 1868. It is believed that Richard and/or the registrar at Nowra confused the dates (both being Saturdays, a week apart) when the registration was made on March 25th. William's birthday was always celebrated by his family on February 29th.
